The Process of Rekeying

06/28/2015 Back To Blog

The Process of RekeyingIt can be a pain if you misplace your set of home or office keys. However, don’t panic, there is a simple solution. There is a process, known as rekeying, which allows our locksmith company in Cypress to change your lock so that you can use another key to open the door. The fear of someone duplicating your key can definitely be frightening. This is enough to send anyone into a panic, especially when you have lots of valuables that you fear may be stolen.

You have the option of rekeying your lock or having a new one installed. The benefit of having a lock rekeyed is that it is generally more economical than having a new lock installed.A locksmith doesn’t need to use any additional parts when rekeying a lock. This makes the process less expensive. The final cost, however, depends on how many locks need to be rekeyed. Just keep this in mind when you are trying to determine which is the best option for you.Although a bit more complicated, rekeying can also be done with high security locks.

Basic Lockset

The basic lockset consists of six pins. When the cylinder is emptied there will be six springs and 12 pins. The lower pins will vary in size, while the upper ones will be the same size. Once all of the pins are removed, the locksmith will choose lower pins to fit within the notches of the key. The pins should be slightly elevated over the shear line so that when the key is inserted, the lower pins push the upper pins enabling the cylinder to operate. It is in your best interest to allow a trained professional to rekey your locks. Often times there may be other adjustments that will need to be made to your doors lock, once rekeyed, to help it work effectively. This can be done at the same time your door is being rekeyed. For instance, if there is a problem with the frame or the lock wasn’t properly installed, a locksmith will be able to make the needed repairs. Rekeying a lock on your own will not provide you with the ability to make the other changes that are necessary.
